Governments are WFP’s principal partners, forming the backbone of our mission to end hunger. They are not only the organization’s largest and most reliable source of funding – providing the voluntary contributions that make WFP’s life?saving work possible – they are also central actors in shaping how that work is delivered.

At every stage, WFP works hand in hand with national and local authorities: from assessing needs and designing programmes to implementing and sustaining solutions. Governments help define priorities, ensure that WFP’s actions align with national strategies, and take forward progress long after WFP’s direct support has ended. This close collaboration reflects a shared responsibility for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Zero Hunger.

Beyond funding and implementation, governments are strategic partners in policy and multilateral cooperation. Through continuous dialogue, joint planning and engagement in global and regional fora, they contribute to shaping policies, governance frameworks, and collective action on food security and nutrition. Partnerships with governments also enable WFP to support national systems, strengthen resilience and address the root causes of hunger in a sustainable way.

Together, WFP and governments form a powerful partnership – combining resources, expertise and leadership to deliver immediate assistance, while building a more food-secure future for all.
